Abstract In October of 1988, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights issued a report that made suggestions that all schools using Native American names and mascots change them. The report stated that the use of Native American names and mascots for athletic teams promoted racial stereotypes. John Harold Goodsman collection

Abstract

The John Harold Goodsman collection contains several letterman sweaters and blanket that belonged to Goodsman while he attended Michigan State Normal College (MSNC) from 1935-39. Goodsman, nicknamed "Red" by his team, lettered in tennis and band. He played tennis for three of his four years attending the school. He was captain of the tennis team for two of his three years participating. Goodsman graduated from MSNC in 1939.

Abstract

This collection includes a single lightweight front zipper jacket with the Michigan State Normal College seal on the left breast of the jacket. The provenance of the item is unknown but it is similar to the outwear worn by athletes at Michigan State Normal College between the 1940s and 1950s.
